U17 Boys: Oxfordshire 2-0 Buckinghamshire

15 Mar

This was a far tougher encounter, played at a high intensity, which looked like it would favour Buckingham’s match schedule and large squad numbers. Buckingham had done their homework and reacted quickly in numbers to isolate Oxfordshire’s central players. Overloading our midfield, Buckingham created options going forward and consequently had shots on goal, one of which looked goal bound until Ollie’s quick reactions saved the ball over the crossbar. Oxfordshire reacted well and transferred the ball decisively through Tom whose distributing was strong, picking out wide balls to Jon and Fernando. The scales tipped in Oxfordshire’s favour when a penalty corner resulted in a defensive foot on the line and a penalty flick was awarded which was cooly converted by Niall. 1-0 at half-time.

With a small squad Oxfordshire’s players needed to dig deep in the second half with a number of players playing out of their preferred positions. Tim and Thomson worked hard in midfield to create space, receiving passes from Ben, Tom and Jon, and link up with the forwards, Ieuan, Robbie and Callum. Callum’s strength, determination and unorthodox approach to playing on pitch, baffled the Buckingham defenders. A decisive run into the D from Brandon wrong footed the Buckinghamshire keeper and, spotting the smallest of gaps between the keeper and the left post, made the most of the opportunity and tapped the ball over the line. The score line could have been very different if it wasn’t for Fernando making two crucial goal line saves before the game was over. 2-0 at full time.
