U17 Boys: Oxfordshire 1-1 Surrey

8 Mar

The U17 boys started their season with a tough fixture against the might of Surrey. Surrey made the early running with real pace and skills in their game, allied to robust defence. Oxfordshire started to grow into the pace of the game and held their own well. But the Surrey pressure eventually told and they took a deserved lead mid-way through the first half. As the second half got underway Oxfordshire started to apply some pressure of their own but the relentless Surrey pace then started to look like it would tell and a few scrambles around the Oxfordshire D had to be weathered as a second Surrey goal began to look likely. But Oxfordshire kept their work rate high and as the game entered its last 10 minutes Oxfordshire started to make more progress and this led to two short corners. From the second Niall Devaney rifled home an equaliser. The last few minutes saw chances at both ends and it took a superb save from Ollie Wickens to keep the scores level in the dying moments. So 1-1 at full time. All in all a great opening game with all the squad playing a full part in a great team effort against a talented opposition. Well done boys.
